Should I give my cat vitamins or is good food enough?

I've been feeding my cat quality premium food for a year now, but lately she's been acting sluggish and her coat looks dull. I see tons of vitamins and supplements for cats in pet stores - do they actually help or is it just marketing?

If your cat is lethargic and has dull fur, those are signs worth paying attention to, but it doesn't necessarily mean vitamins are the issue. You should take her to a vet first, because this kind of behavior can be a sign of health problems rather than nutritional deficiencies. Quality food really does contain everything she needs, but if your cat has been eating it for a year and suddenly starts acting strange, that's a reason to get her checked out.

Vitamins and supplements only make sense if a vet prescribes them - for example, for joint or coat problems, or if your pet eats homemade food instead of commercial feed. In most other cases, it's really just marketing - a healthy cat on good food doesn't need them.

First thing you should do is take your cat to the vet, because lethargy and dull fur can be signs of health problems, not just a vitamin deficiency. It could be anything: from worms to thyroid issues. After the examination, the vet will let you know whether your cat actually needs supplements or if that's not the issue at all.

If your cat is healthy, quality premium food usually contains everything necessary. The vitamins are already added in the right amounts. But there are situations where extra support doesn't hurt - for example, during shedding season, when stressed, or with age-related changes. In those cases, it makes sense to give vitamin treats or supplements, but only the ones your vet recommends. Everything else at the pet store - yeah, that's often just marketing.

Also pay attention to your cat's living conditions: maybe she doesn't get enough movement, or the dry air from heating in your house is affecting her coat. Sometimes the problem is simpler than it seems.
