We still have an old gas boiler from 2008 in our townhouse. Now we're wondering whether we should switch to a heat pump. The subsidies have supposedly been cut. Does it still make economic sense or should we wait a few more years?
The best decision depends on how much longer your gas heating will last and how much money you can put toward it - unfortunately there's no one-size-fits-all answer!
If your 2008 heating system is starting to act up or you'll need to replace something soon anyway, a heat pump makes more sense than if it's still running smoothly for years to come. A terraced house can be tricky sometimes because there's not always enough space for outdoor units. The subsidies have definitely been cut, but there's still some funding from the government - just way less than before. That does make the financial advantage smaller, obviously. But also keep in mind: gas prices are volatile, electricity prices for heat pumps probably won't get cheaper, and with a new system you're more independent from price fluctuations.
Just wait a few more years and hope the heating holds up? I wouldn't do that! If it breaks down in the middle of winter someday, the tradespeople will have you over a barrel and you'll pay emergency rates. Better to plan now while the old heating still works and you have time to shop around. Get concrete quotes from local companies - that's the only way you'll really see if it's right for your house and what it costs. Federal subsidies change all the time, so check current information directly with KfW or your state!
