Don't rush into a heat pump if you have old wiring - rewiring your electrical system can cost as much as the pump itself, or even more. A gas boiler really is more economical if you have access to gas, but keep in mind that maintenance and chimney cleaning are annual expenses and upkeep. A heat pump is great for its independence and low operating costs, but it requires good home insulation, otherwise efficiency drops and your electricity bills will be painful.
Honestly, a lot depends not just on whether you have gas available, but also on how well your house is insulated and what your climate is like. In the south with mild winters, a pump works more efficiently, while in northern regions gas often becomes the only sensible choice.
The choice depends on what you have available: if you have gas connected, a gas boiler is almost always more profitable - fuel is cheaper and pays for itself quickly. If you don't have gas, then a heat pump makes sense, but only if your house is well insulated and you're prepared for high electricity bills - you could overpay quite a bit, it all depends on your region and rates.
