What are the meteor showers people are seeing on social media
I saw a bunch of videos on TikTok and Instagram recently of people filming tons of meteors falling. I don't really understand what that actually is or why it only happens on certain days.

They're not really rain showers, actually - it's that Earth passes through areas of space where there's a bunch of debris from ancient comets, and when our planet goes through those zones the fragments burn up as they enter the atmosphere! What you see in the videos are those fragments burning, which people call "shooting stars" even though technically they're meteors. It only happens on certain dates because Earth's orbit always crosses through the same places each year, so every August, November, December... it happens again in those same times, which is why the videos pile up on those specific dates.
Don't think it's something weird or dangerous - it's totally normal and happens every year 😅 What you're seeing on social media are meteor showers, which happen when Earth crosses the orbit of an old comet and its debris burns up in our atmosphere. That's why you see that "shower" effect, even though they're actually scattered fragments that light up as they enter.
If you want to see them properly, the best thing is to get to a place without light pollution (away from the city), let your eyes adjust for about 20-30 minutes, and look up without sunglasses or anything weird - just lie down on the grass 🌙 The best hours are usually between 2-4 in the morning, when the radiation is most active. That's something most people don't mention and it totally changes the whole experience.
What you're seeing in the videos is basically Earth moving through a cloud of dust and rocks that a comet left behind years ago, and those fragments burn up when they enter our atmosphere, creating those bright streaks you see. The reason it only happens on certain days is that Earth's orbit always passes through the same spots each year, so you can basically predict when it's going to happen!
