What exactly bothered you about these books - the plot, the philosophy, or just the sheer length? I think rereading *War and Peace* or *Crime and Punishment* as an adult is a completely different experience, because now you understand the characters' motivations, you see yourself in their doubts and mistakes, rather than just following along with what happens.
But if you want something fresh, check out Tolstoy's *Anna Karenina* or *The Master and Margarita* - they open up completely differently when you've got real relationships, choices, and disappointments under your belt. Or even something more modest like Chekhov's short stories - small works, but so dense with meaning that behind every sentence you can see the full depth of human life.
