What happened to Timothée Chalamet's Dune 3?

There's no Dune 3 in development with Timothée Chalamet. Denis Villeneuve directed Dune (2021) and Dune: Part Two (2024), and while both did really well at the box office, there hasn't been any official announcement about a third film. Villeneuve has mentioned in interviews that he's interested in moving on to other projects, so it's unclear if he'd even come back for another one.

The thing is, the source material only covers so much. Frank Herbert's original novels have sequels written by his son Brian and Kevin J. Anderson, but adapting those would be pretty different territory. Studios are always hesitant to green-light expensive sequels without a proven director attached, and if Villeneuve isn't interested, it gets complicated. So right now it's just in limbo - there's nothing confirmed, and honestly it might stay that way for a while. The franchise definitely made money, but that doesn't always mean more movies are coming.
