The main thing is to prepare the water and heating system. You need to drain all the water from the pipes, toilet, storm drains, and heating system (if you have one) - otherwise everything will burst when it freezes.

The house: close all windows and doors, check the roof for leaks, seal any cracks if there are any - otherwise moisture will get into the basement and walls. Ventilate the space at least once a month if you can come by - stagnant air leads to mold.

On the property: clear away leaves and branches (they attract rodents), leave the basement vents open, cover heat-loving plants and perennials. It's better to leave the lawn as is, don't mow it at the end of the season - the sod will protect the roots from frost. Finish all the work before the first snow, it's harder to walk around and get things done once there's snow on the ground.
