When you charge at home, you quickly realize that a regular outlet really isn't the right solution - it can actually take over a day. But honestly, that's not really relevant for most people in everyday life, because you can just charge your car overnight. With a good wallbox (11-22 kW) you need 6-8 hours for a full charge on most electric cars, which works great for overnight charging. At public fast chargers it's obviously faster - you can often get to 80% in 20-30 minutes, but the last few percent charge way more slowly, which is completely normal.
It really depends on which charging station you use and what battery is installed. At a regular household outlet, it takes forever - you're looking at a good 24 hours or more for a full charge. With a home wallbox, it's way faster, usually around 6 to 10 hours over the weekend. At public charging stations in supermarkets and such, you're talking 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on whether it's a standard or fast-charging station.
With fast chargers on the highway, things move pretty quickly - you get half an hour of charging and you're back on the road. But a full charge usually takes longer, because the battery slows down toward the end as a safety measure during fast charging. Most people don't actually drive around on a completely empty battery anyway - they just charge to 80 percent or something, then it's quicker. Oh yeah, and newer models with bigger batteries sometimes charge faster than older cars, but it's not always that straightforward to compare.
Forget the household outlet completely - that's just not practical for regular charging. What the others haven't mentioned yet: charging time also depends a lot on whether you're charging with alternating current (AC) or direct current (DC). With a wallbox at home (11 or 22 kW) you need overnight for an average battery, which is totally fine for most people. At public DC fast chargers it can take anywhere from 20 minutes to just under an hour depending on your car and charging power - that's when it really becomes practical for longer drives.
