What's the traffic like in that space going to be - is it an office, a house with kids, or a commercial area? Porcelain tile is honestly the safe choice for 99% of cases, but what nobody usually mentions is that the finish type makes a huge difference! Polished porcelain looks beautiful but it's slippery; matte or textured is safer and on top of that it hides dust. If the budget allows for it, there are also large-format porcelain tiles that drastically reduce the number of grout lines - result: less water damage and much easier to clean and maintain over the years.
It really depends on what you're going for, but porcelain tile is basically the standard these days because it's durable, easy to clean, and works with any budget. Engineered wood is also trending if the project allows for it - gives more of a cozy feel. Some people go for polished concrete or even burnished cement for that industrial look, but then you've got to be ready for the maintenance. What works comes down to how much foot traffic the space will get and what your aesthetic is.
