The main difference is the filtering process. Regular yogurt is made from milk with added starter culture, while Greek yogurt is additionally strained through cloth or special filters to remove the whey. Because of this, Greek yogurt becomes thicker, denser, and takes on a creamier consistency.

Because the whey is removed, Greek yogurt has a higher concentration of protein - noticeably more than regular yogurt. At the same time, it has less carbohydrates and lactose, which can be helpful for those who don't tolerate it well. Taste-wise, Greek yogurt is usually more sour and more intense.

Price-wise, Greek yogurt is more expensive because of the more complex production process - you need more milk to get the same volume of finished product. In cooking, regular yogurt works better in drinks and sauces, while Greek yogurt is preferred eaten with berries and nuts or used as a substitute for sour cream and cream cheese.

i've tried both and i notice the difference right away - greek yogurt is way thicker and denser, almost like cottage cheese, while regular yogurt is thinner and more delicate. that's really because they strain out the extra liquid. greek yogurt also tastes more "milky" to me, maybe because more protein stays in it after the filtering. when i buy for myself, i choose depending on what i'm in the mood for, not which one is healthier - they're both fine.
