I'd go for something that's not "just" food, because your guests might already be bringing dishes and bottles - a gift for the home works better, like nice candles, a cozy blanket, or even a board game if it's a group that likes hanging out together. That way you're giving something that sticks around, not something that's gone by the end of the night.

It really depends on who your guests are and how well you know them. If they're close friends or family, a little "table gift" always works: bottles of good sparkling wine, special sweets, quality cheeses or cured meats. If they're acquaintances or colleagues, something more generic like scented candles, a box of chocolates, or a pack of tea/coffee is perfect without being too personal. Do you have any idea how much you're willing to spend roughly?

Another nice option is bringing something that "goes with" the evening: gourmet snacks, fresh fruit, a homemade dessert if you can cook. At New Year's people also appreciate little luxuries like roasted hazelnuts, artisanal panettone, or just a good prosecco if you're not sure what to get. A lot of people also give little New Year's gifts like keychains, nice calendars, or slightly funny things that bring good cheer.

What are they usually like? Are they more the gourmet type, or do they prefer practical things?

Stefano_88 asker They're mostly friends, a mix of foodies and practical people. I'll probably go with some good sparkling wine and something homemade and indulgent. Thanks!

You don't necessarily have to bring an actual gift - usually it's enough to bring something good to eat together, like a homemade dessert or a decent bottle of wine, and the evening works out fine anyway. If you really want to give something more personal, it depends on how well you know your hosts: with people you see often, something practical for the house works better (a candle, a blanket), but with acquaintances food is less risky and more universally appreciated.
