Planning to build a brick cottage in Tver Oblast, I want to do without additional external insulation. Is a wall of one and a half bricks (38 cm) enough or do I need the full two bricks?
A one-and-a-half brick wall isn't enough for Tver Oblast without insulation - you need at least two bricks (51 cm), and it's better to add another layer of mineral wool or polystyrene foam 10-15 cm thick, otherwise you'll get heat loss and condensation on the interior surfaces in winter.
Actually, a brick and a half in the Tver region is technically the minimum, but without insulation it's still gonna be pretty chilly, especially if it's an older house that's being built that way and the winters there are no joke. Two bricks plus at least 50-100 mm of mineral wool between the brick and the interior finish will give you peace of mind and reasonable heating bills - that's a comfortable solution for that kind of climate.
