DVDs never really stopped being used - they just faded to background noise. Netflix and streaming services started gaining serious traction around 2010-2012, but DVD sales didn't actually peak until 2007, and they remained a legitimate market well into the 2010s. Most people had migrated to streaming by the mid-2010s, though home video sales (including Blu-ray and DVDs) still exist today in 2026, just way smaller than they used to be. Your mum's collection isn't outdated nostalgia so much as a relic of the overlap period when streaming was convenient but physical media was still normal.
