When should I start taking iron supplements during pregnancy?

I'm 8 weeks pregnant and my gynecologist told me to start taking iron already, but I have friends who say they didn't take it until later. I'm worried about whether it's necessary this soon or if I can wait a bit because it makes me nauseous. What month does it really become important to take it?

What your gynecologist told you is the right call because every pregnancy is different and they know your blood work! Some women start later if their iron levels are fine, but if they've already prescribed it to you it's probably because you need it. Nausea is really common with iron, so try taking it with food, before bed, or ask if you can switch to a different formulation (some are better tolerated than others). The important thing is that you follow your doctor's instructions instead of going by what other people did, because needs vary so much from one person to another!
