I usually send out invitations two or three weeks before the event - that gives people time to think it over and plan their day. If the party's gonna be big or there's a lot of guests, a month ahead wouldn't hurt. You can let close friends know later, but if the date falls on a weekend or holiday, it's better to give them a heads-up earlier.
