Why am I suddenly allergic to my pet after years of having no issues?

I've had my cat for like 8 years with zero problems, but the last few months I've been getting itchy eyes and sneezing around her. My friend said maybe my immune system changed or something. Is this actually possible, or could something else be causing this?

Don't assume it's automatically your cat - sometimes a sudden allergy spike comes from environmental stuff like seasonal pollen ramping up, or mold in your home triggering a broader sensitivity that makes you react to things you never did before. Your immune system can definitely shift without warning, but it's worth checking if anything else changed recently (new furniture, different detergent, humidity levels) before blaming your pet entirely.

Adult-onset pet allergies are genuinely real and happen more often than people realize - your immune system can shift over time due to stress, hormonal changes, other allergies developing, or even environmental factors. That said, something else could be triggering this too: your cat might have picked up a new food that's changing her dander, or you could be reacting to something she's been exposed to outside rather than the cat herself. Best move is to get tested by an allergist so you actually know what you're dealing with instead of guessing, because if it turns out to be something specific, there are ways to manage it.
