So apparently our hospitals, transport systems, and other services are really having a hard time when it gets hot. Makes you wonder what's actually going wrong - is it just old infrastructure not built for this, or are there specific things breaking down? Seems like something we should all know about given how often we're getting heatwaves now.

The real problem is that British infrastructure was literally designed for cooler temperatures - asphalt softens around 30°C, rail lines expand and buckle, water mains lose pressure as demand spikes. What people often miss, though, is that it's not just about the pipes and roads themselves; staff shortages get worse during heatwaves because people call in sick or can't work safely, so even functioning infrastructure runs with skeleton crews trying to manage it. Hospitals struggle partly because air conditioning was considered unnecessary decades ago, transport networks weren't built with thermal buffers, and there's a compounding effect where one failure cascades into others - a rail buckle delays trains, which means overcrowding elsewhere, which creates its own crisis.
