Why do dad jokes never get old?

AN anna1999 DE 🛠️ Specialist 👁 88 ⚑ Report Humor

My dad has been telling the same terrible puns for like 20 years, and honestly they're so bad they've looped back around to being funny. Is there actually something psychologically wired into us that makes groan-worthy humor work, or am I just conditioned at this point?

There's definitely something to the predictability factor - dad jokes work because you *know* they're coming and that anticipation is half the fun. The groan-worthiness is actually the point; that shared "oh come on" moment creates this weird bonding experience where everyone's in on the joke together, even if the joke itself is terrible. After 20 years your brain's probably wired to expect those puns from your dad specifically, so there's comfort in the routine too. It's less about the humor landing and more about the ritual of it all, which honestly might be why they never get old.

I noticed with my own family that the worst jokes become almost ritualistic - my uncle will deliver the same pun about wood every barbecue, and at this point we laugh before he even finishes because the whole thing is familiar comfort wrapped in groan-inducing delivery. I think you're not just conditioned, but also riding on the predictability itself; there's a weird pleasure in knowing exactly where a joke is going and watching someone commit fully to something so intentionally bad. The repetition over years actually strengthens it, because the joke stops being about the punchline and becomes about the relationship and the shared history of "oh god, here we go again.

The brain actually rewards you for solving a puzzle, even a stupid one, which is why that groan-and-laugh combo hits - your dad's probably nailed the timing too, so after 20 years you're basically laughing at the ritual itself more than the joke.
