Why do strange coincidences start happening after a close person dies?

My grandfather passed away in January 2025, and ever since I keep running into his favorite music in the most unexpected places - in stores, in my friend's car, even in TikTok recommendations. My friend says he's sending me signs, but I'm skeptical about it. Maybe it's just a coincidence, or is my mind subconsciously looking for a connection?

It's more a matter of your psyche searching for a connection with the person after losing them. When someone dies, your brain unconsciously starts filtering information through the lens of that loss - you notice their music because it's meaningful to you now, while you simply ignore all the other sounds. If you'd considered your grandfather's songs completely forgotten, you probably wouldn't have noticed them so much. This is called selective perception and it's completely normal after a loss.

Plus there's the "pink car effect" - when you learn about something, you suddenly start seeing it everywhere. The music is everywhere: in stores, on social media, in your friends' cars. You just weren't looking for it before, but now you're searching for it unconsciously. TikTok recommendations work based on your watch history and algorithm anyway - it makes perfect sense that content you're interested in right now shows up there.

This doesn't mean your feelings are illegitimate or that you're wrong to be skeptical. After someone dies, your brain really does search for comfort and connection - it's a completely normal psychological response to grief. You can treat these "coincidences" as something nice that helps you remember your grandfather without believing in the supernatural. Both at the same time - that's a healthy approach.
