Why do they charge me more if I buy tickets with a credit card?

I just tried to buy a flight to Cancún on Volaris and got hit with a surcharge of almost 8% just for paying with my Visa. Other airlines like Viva Air don't charge me anything extra. Is this normal or is there a way to avoid it?

Volaris charges that surcharge because credit cards generate commissions for the airline (typically between 2-3% or more), and they're just passing that cost on to you. It's legal and pretty common with some low-cost airlines, though others like Viva Air prefer to absorb those fees. To avoid it, your best option is to pay with a bank transfer or debit if they allow it, or use a debit card instead of credit (some sites charge less for debit). It's also worth checking if your bank has some agreement with Volaris to avoid the extra commission.
