People often forget about the dust buildup inside the case - it clogs the heatsinks and fans, which makes the system throttle the CPU to avoid overheating :/ I noticed once that my laptop suddenly got slower and the battery was draining faster. Opened it up and there was such a dust ball inside that the radiator could barely breathe. After cleaning it - like brand new, didn't need any optimizations at all.

On top of clearing disk space and startup programs, which have already been mentioned, it makes sense to periodically blow out your computer with compressed air or at least vacuum it with a slot for ventilation from underneath. If your laptop is old or you're in a dusty environment - do this every year or so, no less. Way cheaper than replacing hardware 😊

Most of the time it's a bunch of junk in the form of temporary files, outdated drivers, and programs that are stuck in startup and eating up resources. Start with the basics: clean up your disk from unnecessary stuff, go into startup and disable everything that shouldn't be launching when you turn on your computer. If your disk is completely full (red bar in properties), then only cleaning it up or replacing it with a larger one will help, because the system just can't work properly without free space. If none of that helps, then it might be a hardware issue - in that case you should check the temperature of your CPU and GPU, the cooling might be clogged up.

I'll add something people often miss: check how much free space is left on the disk where your system is installed. When free space drops below 10-15%, Windows starts running noticeably slower because it needs room for temporary files and cache. Try moving large folders (videos, photos, documents) to another partition or external drive - often this gives way more of a speed boost than cleaning up autostart programs.

One more useful thing: open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) and see which processes are eating up memory and CPU right now. Sometimes it's just one program that's frozen or malfunctioning - and you just need to reinstall or uninstall it. That's faster than blindly cleaning up your whole computer.
