Why does my electricity bill calculation seem wrong?

Just got my latest power bill and the math doesn't add up to me. I know my usage in kWh and the rate per kWh, but when I multiply them together I get a different total than what's on the invoice. Are there hidden fees calculated differently, or am I missing something about how kilowatt-hours actually work?

The math usually *does* work, but most bills have layers you're not seeing on that first glance. Beyond the base usage charge, there are almost always fixed service fees, taxes, and sometimes demand charges if you're on a commercial plan or have a really high peak usage in a single billing period. Check if your invoice breaks down those line items separately - they'll add up to that total you're confused about. If the kWh rate itself seems off, double-check whether your utility company charges different rates at different times of day or seasons, which would mean your usage isn't all at a single price point.
