I ran over a tree root on the road and got a sidewall puncture on my Haval Jolion. The shop told me the edge is damaged and the tire can't be saved. A new one costs a fair bit, and patching doesn't make sense. Is this normal or are they just trying to squeeze money out of me? And how do they actually figure out when a tire can't be fixed?

I had to replace a tire once after something similar happened, and I realized that the mechanics weren't lying - a sidewall puncture really can't be patched. I'll just add one thing: even if technically you could glue a patch on, it would come off under pressure and heat while driving, because the sidewall constantly flexes and works completely differently from the flat tread - the stresses are totally different there.

Unfortunately, a sidewall puncture is truly one of the most serious injuries a tire can sustain. The thing is, the sidewalls (the side parts of the tire) work completely differently from the tread. On the tread, pressure is distributed evenly, and the patch is held in place by fabric fibers that don't get damaged in a sidewall puncture. But the sidewall is a thin layer of rubber without the reinforcements that exist in the central part. When a hole gets punctured there, there's no point in patching it, because the spot will bulge out from the air pressure inside. It's just a matter of time before the patch flies off.

It's easy to check the diagnosis: take a close look at where the puncture is. If it's on the sidewall (on the sides of the tire where it curves) - then the mechanics are right, there's nothing to save. Don't bother looking for a shop that'll agree to patch the sidewall - even if you find one, it's just a temporary fix before trouble on the road. The reason is simple: the sidewall constantly flexes while you're driving, and any patch there just won't hold up to the stress, unlike the tread. You can check how serious the puncture is yourself - look at how far the damage is from the edge (if it's closer than an inch or two from the rim), and try to figure out how deep the cut goes.
