Why is my brake pad wearing out so quickly?

I changed the brake pads on my Volkswagen Gol just 8 months ago and they're already wearing down again. I drive a lot in the city with heavy traffic, and I drive normally, nothing extreme. The mechanic said it could be a master cylinder problem or I might be braking wrong, but I'm not really sure. Is this normal or is there something wrong with my braking system?
