Why is Wales banning greyhound racing and what happens to all the dogs?

Wales is apparently banning greyhound racing completely, and people are warning about a rehoming crisis. So there are loads of greyhounds that need homes now presumably? This seems like a major shift and I'm curious about the animal welfare side of things and whether there's actually enough capacity to rehome all these dogs.

Wales passed the ban because of animal welfare concerns - greyhounds face injuries, overtaining, and poor living conditions in racing environments, plus there's the issue of what happens to dogs that don't perform well. The rehoming situation is genuinely challenging because there are hundreds of dogs needing homes and existing rescue organizations, though doing great work, just don't have the capacity or funding to take them all on at once, so it's been a scramble to find private adopters and get charities extra support to handle the influx.

The rehoming side is genuinely the harder problem than the ban itself - most people focus on the welfare reasons (which are valid) but skip over the fact that greyhound rescue groups are already stretched thin and a sudden influx from racing kennels doesn't automatically mean those dogs are adoption-ready. A lot of racing greyhounds have never lived in a home, haven't been socialized to normal household stuff, and some have prey drive issues that make them risky around cats or small pets, so they need serious rehabilitation before placement. The real worry isn't whether the ban makes sense ethically, but whether there's actual infrastructure - funding, foster capacity, behavioral training - to handle what comes next without just shifting the problem to overcrowded shelters.
