Air conditioner smells like mold and dampness, what should I do?

I've had a split-system air conditioner in my apartment for three years now, and recently I noticed an unpleasant musty smell coming from the indoor unit. I cleaned the air filter a month ago. Could it be scale buildup in the pipes or radiator? Do I need to call a technician or can I try cleaning it myself?

Is your AC running in cooling mode or has the weather already gotten cold? The moldy smell usually shows up when the indoor unit hasn't been running for a while - moisture builds up inside and mold starts growing. It's not just the filter that gets clogged - the heat exchanger and drain system do too, so just cleaning the filter won't cut it. Try running the AC at full power for an hour or two to dry everything out, but if the smell doesn't go away, better call a technician - you'll need professional disinfection of the radiator and drain cleaning.

lyudmila_sova asker Yeah, it's gotten cooler already, so I don't turn on the AC much! Thanks, I'll try running it on full blast, and if that doesn't help I'll call a technician.
