It's not that all his friends actually have a mobile phone, you know, it just seems that way because the ones who do have it are the most visible! At 11 years old it's still fine to wait a couple more years, or if he really needs it to contact you, consider getting him a basic phone without social media access instead of a full smartphone.

Don't fall into the trap of thinking that because "everyone" has one your kid is going to fall behind 😅 I have cousins that age and honestly, at 11 they're still at an awkward age for having their own phone - mostly because they don't have the maturity to use it responsibly, and trust me, I've seen all kinds of drama in parent groups that's just not worth it. My recommendation would be to wait until 13 or 14, or if they really need it earlier for coordination to get to school, give them a basic phone that's only for calls and texts, no data. But if you do get them one, set clear boundaries from day one because after that it's a mess to change them.
