Best way to learn digital painting if I only have an iPad and Apple Pencil?

I picked up an iPad Air last year and got the Apple Pencil, but I'm completely new to digital art. I've been watching YouTube tutorials but there's so much conflicting advice about which apps to use and how to actually develop the fundamentals. Should I start with Procreate or try something like Clip Studio Paint first?

procreate is the safer bet for a beginner since it's simpler to navigate and you wont get lost in 200 menus like clip studio can be. that said, which style of art are you leaning toward - illustration, character design, concept stuff? that might actually matter more than the app choice, since some people swear by clip studio for comics or animation but procreate feels more natural for painting and sketching.

fisher_brian asker Mostly going for illustration and character design, some painting stuff. I've been leaning toward Procreate based on what I've read anyway.

The fundamentals matter way more than which app you pick, so don't stress about that choice too much. Whatever you go with, focus on doing actual drawing exercises - gesture sketches, value studies, basic shapes - instead of jumping straight into finished pieces. A lot of beginners get stuck in app tutorials without building core skills, then blame the software when things don't click. Are you drawn more to character work, environments, or abstract stuff, or are you still figuring that out?
