Don't want to pay for Photoshop or Clip Studio Paint, want to try something free. Heard about Krita, but maybe there's something else good out there? Need it specifically for painting, not photo editing.
Krita is an excellent choice, I'd recommend it first of all - the painting tools there are really powerful. Also try Ibis Paint X (there's a free version with limitations) and GIMP, though the latter is more for editing, but it works for drawing too.
I'd recommend it too. Personally, I tried Clip Studio Paint on a trial period once, but then switched to Krita specifically because it's designed for painting rather than photo editing. If Krita seems not powerful enough, check out Procreate Dreams, though that one requires a paid subscription. And from completely free options, I've seen people do pretty decent work in Medibang Paint - the interface is more minimalist there, but the painting brushes are decent.
