I tried the same thing a few years ago with an old phone and the frustration was real! What nobody mentions is that even if you manage to install an older version of WhatsApp, you probably won't be able to verify your phone number because WhatsApp's servers now require much newer versions for the authentication process. Basically you end up with the app installed but useless, so honestly at that point it's worth more just to get yourself something more recent or use WhatsApp Web from a computer if what you need is to access your conversations!

It depends on which version of Android your HTC Desire has, but honestly, older models usually end up without support. WhatsApp doesn't work well on old Android versions anymore (I think you need at least Android 5.0 or something), and most old HTC Desire phones run lower versions. I'd recommend checking what Android version yours has, but chances are you won't be able to install WhatsApp on it anymore.

Don't waste time trying to update Android on those old phones because they literally won't let you. What I'd do is look for an older version of WhatsApp as an APK (like from 2019 or 2020) that's still compatible with Android 4.0 or whatever your HTC has, so at least it'll work for basic messaging even if WhatsApp eventually stops supporting it.

The older HTC Desires generally get stuck on Android 4 or 5, and official WhatsApp stopped supporting those versions years ago. If you've already tried it and it won't let you install from the Play Store, the reality is that phone has already passed its expiration date for the app, so you're better off investing in a newer phone even if it's the cheapest one you can find.

An APK version from 2018 or 2019 is your best bet if the Play Store won't let you install it, though you'll probably end up having verification problems anyway because WhatsApp's servers are pretty picky about that stuff. I had an HTC like that years ago and basically the phone became useless for messaging because even though I managed to install the app, it wouldn't let me log in without a valid number and I just gave up.
