I turned off read receipts in settings but my contacts can still somehow tell when I've seen their messages. Is there a way to actually hide this, or is WhatsApp just not showing the proper status on my end?
I had the exact same frustration a couple years back when my sister wouldn't stop calling me out for ignoring her messages. The thing is, if you've turned off read receipts in Settings > Privacy > Read Receipts, that should actually be working on your end - your contacts won't see the blue checkmarks when you read their stuff. What's probably happening is they're just noticing you're active or online (which shows separately), or they're seeing your "last seen" timestamp and figuring it out that way. If you really want to go full ghost mode, you'd need to turn off "Last Seen" in that same Privacy section, and maybe disable your online status too - that's usually what's giving you away more than read receipts actually are.
