Do electric toothbrushes cause receding gums?

MA Mark Lee IE 🔍 Enthusiast 👁 70 ⚑ Report Dental Care

I switched to an electric toothbrush about 6 months ago and lately I've noticed my gums seem to be pulling back, especially on the lower front teeth. I'm using a mid-range Oral-B model and brushing twice daily. Is this from the vibration, or am I just noticing something that was already happening?

Don't blame the toothbrush itself - receding gums usually come from brushing too hard or at the wrong angle, which is actually easier to do wrong with an electric brush since you don't need to apply pressure. It's worth checking with a dentist because gum recession can also be caused by genetics, grinding your teeth, or gum disease, and six months is enough time for you to notice something that's been slowly happening anyway.
