Does Apple Watch fitness tracking actually work for workouts?

I've been using my Apple Watch Series 9 for about 3 months now and I'm wondering if the calorie burn and heart rate data is actually accurate compared to what I'm actually doing. Like, is it really comparable to something like a Garmin watch that runners use? I'm doing mostly running and some gym sessions.

What kind of accuracy are you looking for - ballpark estimates or numbers you can trust to the decimal? The Apple Watch does solid work for tracking heart rate and distance, especially for running where GPS is straightforward, but calorie estimates tend to be pretty rough across all smartwatches, including Garmin. For gym sessions with weights or machines, it gets even shakier since the watch can't really know what you're actually lifting or doing. Most people find the data useful for spotting trends and patterns over time rather than treating individual workout numbers as gospel, which is probably the sweet spot for how Apple Watch fitness works best.

Kate_1998 asker Yeah, I'm basically looking for trend tracking rather than exact numbers - just want to know if it's in the ballpark so I can see my progress over time.
