Should you thank someone who sends you money by bank transfer?

My grandma sent me 100 euros for my birthday through her banking app. I thanked her over video call afterwards, but now I'm wondering if that was a bit of a light thank you. Do people really expect some kind of special reaction or is it fine?

You already did the main thing by thanking her on video call, that's not nothing. After that it depends a bit on your grandma, but generally for a birthday transfer that's more than enough - a quick thanks shows you appreciated it and that's it. If you really want to go the extra mile, you could send her a text or message to tell her it was nice, but honestly I don't think she's expecting much more, she just wanted to make you happy.

A thank you on video call is already solid, but it really depends on your relationship with your grandma. If she's the formal type or if you're close, a little written message afterward (text, WhatsApp or even an actual letter if she's into that) makes more of an impression than just a passing conversation. No need for a whole speech, just a couple lines telling her it made you happy and that you're thinking of her. For a lot of people her age, that kind of gesture matters more than the money itself, you know.
