How do I choose the right running shoes?

I want to get seriously into running but I have no idea how to choose my shoes. I have pretty flat feet and I've noticed that after 3-4 km I get knee pain. Is it really important to go to a specialty store or can I just grab a pair that looks good?

Go to a specialized running store, it's really worth it with flat feet - they'll analyze your gait and recommend shoes with proper arch support, which should fix your knee pain. The pain you're feeling after 3-4 km is probably coming from that, not from being out of shape.

Knee pain after 3-4 km is often a sign that your shoes aren't suited to your body type, especially with flat feet. A specialty store will really make a difference because they'll watch how you land and find you something with good arch support, otherwise you'll just keep hurting yourself and it'll get worse.
