Your freezer accumulates ice especially when you open and close the door frequently, and there are several ways to defrost it without unplugging it. If your model has an automatic defrost function, just turn it on from the control panel - some freezers have it built in and it saves you from doing everything manually. Otherwise, the simplest method is to put containers of hot water (not boiling, or you risk damage) inside the freezer with the door closed: the heat will gradually melt the ice without disconnecting anything.
You can also use a hair dryer on hot air, holding it at a safe distance, or a plastic scraper to remove ice chunks as you go. If you have space, put towels or old newspapers on the bottom to absorb the water dripping down - way less of a mess. The important thing is not to use sharp objects like knives, which puncture the refrigerant tubes and ruin everything.
If your freezer doesn't have automatic defrost, expect the process to take a few hours or so. In the meantime you can check on the ice occasionally and swap out the hot water containers if they cool down. It's more annoying than anything, but it works.
When I had to deal with this problem, I used the hair dryer method: turn on the blow dryer on low power, direct the heat toward the accumulated ice and as it melts, remove the pieces with a plastic spatula. It works well if you're not in a hurry, but be careful not to damage the interior walls.
