How do you memorize long monologues for theater roles?

I'm preparing for a community theater production and my character has this 5-minute monologue in act two. I've tried reading it over and over but it's not sticking. What techniques actually work for memorizing this much text?

One thing that really helps beyond just the chunking approach is understanding the emotional arc and logic of what your character is saying - basically, why they're saying each line and what they want from the audience. Once you grasp the throughline of the monologue instead of treating it as random words, your brain naturally holds onto it better because it's following a story rather than memorizing disconnected sentences. Pairing this with physicality - adding gestures or movement to specific lines - gives your muscle memory something to anchor to as well, which tends to make the whole thing stick around longer.

Breaking the monologue into smaller chunks - maybe 4-8 lines at a time - and memorizing each section thoroughly before linking them together is way more effective than trying to tackle the whole thing at once. Once you've got the pieces down, running through it while actually moving around the stage (blocking) helps cement it in your muscle memory, which is huge because your body remembers the movements and the words just follow naturally.
