My Golf 8 now has just under 60,000 km on it and the service light came on. The dealer says I should get the oil changed, but I've heard that with newer VWs you can go longer between oil changes than you used to. What's actually necessary now?
That's actually not really controversial at all - with modern Golfs like yours, you don't have to stick to old intervals anymore, instead you go by VW's Service Management System, which is flexible. In your case, the service indicator came on, which means VW itself thinks it's time now - and that's based on your actual driving habits, not rigid mileage intervals. What kind of driving do you do anyway, mostly city traffic or highway, and how long has it been since your last service?
Does your Golf have a petrol or diesel engine? With the Golf 8 petrol, you can easily go up to 15,000 km or even longer, same goes for diesel. VW actually did extend the service intervals, that's true. If the service light comes on for you already at 60k, you should still go in for service, but not necessarily just because of the oil - there could be something else due. Check the service message more carefully or have it read out real quick, then you'll know what's actually due.
