How to celebrate a birthday when you're dealing with social anxiety?

I've got my birthday coming up next month and people keep asking what I want to do. The thing is, large gatherings really stress me out, but I also don't want to be lonely or seem ungrateful. Has anyone figured out a way to mark the day that actually feels good without forcing yourself into situations that drain you?

You don't actually have to choose between a huge party and complete isolation - there's genuinely a middle ground that works way better! A smaller hangout with just a few people you actually click with, or even a one-on-one dinner with someone close, can feel way more meaningful than forcing yourself through a crowded room feeling drained the whole time. People who care about you get it, and honestly most folks appreciate knowing what makes you comfortable rather than watching you white-knuckle through something miserable. You could also do something solo that feels celebratory to you - a nice meal you love, a day out doing something you enjoy - and let people know that's your thing this year.
