Disassemble and soak in hot water with baking soda for about 30 minutes - works way better than any product. Then scrub it with an abrasive sponge or even a steel brush. If it's really burnt on, apply some white vinegar after the baking soda and it'll come right off.

Don't use products that are too abrasive or strong acids directly on the burner because it can damage the finish, especially if it's made of aluminum. People are right about baking soda, but what a lot of folks forget is that you really need to let it soak, like for about 2 hours or even overnight if it's really burnt on, because half an hour alone won't do the trick if there's a lot of buildup. Then scrub it with the soft side of a sponge or an old toothbrush, and for stubborn dirt, a paste made with baking soda and water works great - it works because the abrasion is gentle but effective.
