I want to install a smart video doorbell like one from Ring or Logitech, but I only have an old mechanical doorbell with two wires. Can I just swap it out or do I need an electrician? My house wiring is from 2008, so it's not the newest.
you definitely need an electrician if your current doorbell runs on a transformer - because smart doorbells draw way more power than old mechanical models and your transformer is probably way too weak. that's the critical issue a lot of people miss. with two wires, you might have a hidden transformer somewhere in the house (often in the breaker box or under the roof). an electrician will check it out, measure the voltage (probably 8 - 12 volts) and see if the transformer even still works.
if the transformer is too weak, you need a new one - and that's not something you just diy, even if you're handy. most video doorbells then need a stronger transformer with at least 16 - 24 volts, some even 30 watts. depending on which model you go with, you might also need a mains connection instead of just the two doorbell wires. that's definitely a job for a pro, especially since 2008 electrical work also has safety standards to think about.
