I live in an area near the forest here in São Paulo and these marmosets keep getting into my yard every night, messing with the trash and scaring my dog. I've already tried putting up netting, but they manage to jump over it. Does anyone know an effective way to keep them away without hurting them?
We had this problem at my place too with some marmosets that wouldn't leave our service area alone, and what actually worked was keeping the trash in a heavy closed container, because they're pretty creative at opening things. Nighttime lighting helps a lot too - they're afraid of bright light - and if you put a radio on out there at night, the noise drives them away. Another thing I'd recommend is checking if there's fruit or food scraps scattered around the yard and cleaning it up properly, because without food they'll just look for somewhere else. They jump over fences really easily, so I don't think any physical barrier will really solve it, but these tactics together usually work pretty well.
Marmosets are nocturnal and incredibly agile animals, so a closed trash can is really essential - but the trick that actually works is removing any water source in your yard at night, because they come mainly for water and easy food. Try also leaving a radio on near the area where they usually show up (moderate volume), because continuous and unpredictable noises scare these little guys quite a bit. Another thing: if you have fruit falling from trees, pick everything up before dark, because it's like leaving a buffet open for them! The combination of these things makes your yard much less attractive than it was before.
