How to replace the battery in an old Android phone?

I've got a Samsung Galaxy S4 that still works fine but the battery barely lasts 2 hours now. Back in the day you could just pop the back off and swap in a new battery, but I'm not sure if my phone has a removable battery or if I need to take it apart. What's the safest way to do this without breaking anything?

You're in luck - the Galaxy S4 actually does have a removable battery, which is one of the nicer things about that older model. Just power it off completely, then gently pry off the back cover with your fingernail or a plastic spoon (don't use metal), and the battery should lift right out. Pop in a new one, snap the cover back on, and you're done. Just make sure you grab a genuine Samsung battery or a decent third-party one from somewhere reputable, since cheap knock-offs can be sketchy.

The S4 battery is definitely removable, so don't waste money on a repair shop or risk cracking the screen trying to pry into the phone itself. Power it down first, then work the back cover off gently from the bottom edge - use a fingernail or soft plastic pick, not a metal tool, since the cover clips are pretty easy to snap if you're rough with it. Once that's off the battery just slides out, and you can drop a new one in and snap the cover back.
