iPhone 16 overheating during gaming - normal or defective?

Just got my iPhone 16 Pro last week and been playing Genshin Impact for like an hour. The phone gets pretty hot, almost uncomfortable to hold. Is this normal for the new models or should I be worried about a defective unit? Haven't had this issue with my old iPhone 13.

An hour of Genshin Impact is genuinely intense for any phone, and the iPhone 16 Pro does push things pretty hard! Some heat is totally normal during heavy gaming - the processor works overtime and that energy has to go somewhere. That said, if it's getting uncomfortably hot to the point where you can't hold it, that's worth paying attention to. Try closing background apps, lowering the graphics settings in-game, or give it a break between sessions and see if it settles down. If it keeps overheating even during lighter use or normal browsing, you might have a defective unit and should contact Apple while you're still in the return window.

Getting warm during intense gaming is expected, but if you're genuinely uncomfortable holding it after an hour, that's worth paying attention to. Check if other apps make it as hot - if it's only Genshin, you're probably fine since that game absolutely hammers the GPU. What matters is whether it throttles (frame drops) or shuts down, or if the heat persists after you stop gaming. If it cools down normally within a few minutes and doesn't have weird behavior, it's likely just the A18 Pro doing its job under load. That said, if your iPhone 13 never got that hot with the same game, a quick Apple Store visit won't hurt to rule out a bad unit.
