Is a landline worth it or should I just stick with a mobile phone?

I just moved and I'm wondering whether I should still get a classic landline from Telekom or if that's completely pointless. I do have good LTE at home, but I'm asking myself whether a landline might actually be safer for emergencies and whether the costs wouldn't be cheaper anyway compared to constantly buying more data for my phone.

I wouldn't just blindly go all-in on "mobile only" just because it's trendy. The thing is: if your battery dies or the network goes down, you've got a real problem in an emergency. A landline works independently of that and also functions during a power outage (at least the classic copper line), as long as the exchange still has power. That's actually more relevant for emergency calls than a lot of people think. Plus, you need a line for internet anyway - if you've already got a contract for that, adding a phone often costs just a few euros extra.

When it comes to price, I'd be skeptical about whether "mobile only" really ends up cheaper. Sure, the actual call rates on a landline are usually cheap, but if you make a lot of calls over your phone, you'll end up paying more - even with an unlimited plan, those aren't exactly affordable monthly. With Telekom you often get combo packages where landline, internet and mobile together cost less than buying them separately. My guess: a basic landline will cost you noticeably less than you'd think.

What you could do: just do the math. Go on the Telekom website, open their configurator, run through both options (with and without landline), add up the total costs over 24 months. And honestly, if you've got decent LTE coverage where you are, but it's just not always available - I'd see the landline as just a safety net. Those few euros a month are worth it just to have a backup plan.
