Is an overlock machine really worth it for beginners?

I've been sewing with my regular sewing machine for half a year now, and I'm thinking about buying an overlock machine. A lot of people say it's unnecessary for beginners, but I keep seeing these beautiful finished seams on Instagram. Do I really need a machine like that or am I just wasting money? Which models aren't too complicated?

You can get neat finished edges with your regular machine too - using a zigzag stitch or special presser feet looks pretty good already. An overlock really only makes sense if you're regularly working with stretchy fabrics like jersey or if the process starts feeling too slow for you. For beginners, I'd save the money and invest it in better fabrics and a few cool presser feet instead. If you figure out later that you actually need one, there are affordable starter models from brands like Janome or Singer that aren't complicated - but for now it's more of a nice-to-have than a must-have 😊

If you're really sewing regularly and want your projects to look more professional, an overlock is definitely worth it - but not because you need one, rather because it takes work off your hands and the finish is noticeably better. The Instagram pictures are just heavily filtered; a regular sewing machine with proper seams works fine too, but finished edges just look more polished and last longer.

For beginner models, I'd go for 3/4-thread overlocks - they're simpler to handle than 5-thread versions. You adjust the thread tension and stitch length, and then you're good to go. You don't need expensive professional machines; cheaper models do solid work too. What really matters is that you're actually sewing frequently beforehand, otherwise the machine just sits around and you'll regret spending the money.
