Is it actually rude to sit in the front row at a show or event?

Gillian Anderson's apparently gotten some pushback after telling fans sitting in the front row that they're distracting. It's got people talking about whether front row seating is fair game or if there's some unwritten rule about it. Seems like a bit of a hot take on her part, and now everyone's weighing in on what's acceptable when you've actually paid for a ticket to be there.

It's not rude to sit in the front row if you've paid for that seat - you bought the right to be there. That said, performers sometimes get distracted by movement, phones, or people talking right in front of them, which is probably what Anderson was reacting to rather than the seating itself. There's a difference between occupying your front row spot and actively doing things that pull focus (like filming the whole show on your phone or standing when everyone else is seated). Most people would say as long as you're just... sitting there and watching, you're fine.
