Is it rude to not wear shoes when visiting friends at home?

Depends on the house honestly. Some people prefer you keep shoes on, others think it's gross. Best move is just to ask when you arrive or take cues from them - if they kick theirs off, you probably should too. Most folks won't be offended either way, they'll just tell you what they prefer.
