Is it safe to use public WiFi for email and browsing?

Public WiFi is risky for anything sensitive - hackers can intercept your passwords and personal data pretty easily on open networks! For just browsing regular websites it's mostly fine, but I'd avoid checking email or anything involving passwords or banking unless you're using a VPN to encrypt your connection.
