Is it still worth buying a spinning rod or is a baitrunner reel better?

Hey, I'm trying to update my fishing gear for river fishing. I've noticed that in recent years a lot of people use modern baitrunner reels instead of traditional rods. A guy at the fishing shop in Brescia told me that nowadays most young anglers are going for that. Is it really worth spending 200-300 euros or should I stick with the classic setup I already know?

In my opinion, the shop assistant confused you a bit, because a rod and reel are two completely different things that work together - it's not an either/or choice. The baitrunner is a reel function (like a secondary brake) that's useful if you fish with live bait, but it doesn't replace a good rod; it really depends on what kind of river fishing you do. If you already have a rod you like, spending 200-300 euros just on a baitrunner reel when your gear works fine doesn't make sense, unless you're already thinking about a serious upgrade to your whole setup.
